What is Organic Cotton GOTS?
For many people, there’s nothing better than sleeping in natural cotton when it comes to bed linen. The fabric is loved all over the world for its beautiful look and feel.
Sadly, cotton farming takes a serious toll on the environment. Due to high demand, cotton farmers often use excessive amounts of pesticides to make cotton grow faster. Not only do these damage the environment but they can also have harmful consequences for the communities farming the crop.
A sustainable alternative GOTS certified Organic Cotton.
As described on the GOTS website: “The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fibres, including ecological and social criteria, backed up by independent certification of the entire textile supply chain.” The products which carry this certification have a guarantee of organic fibers, non toxic, whose entire production process protects both the environment and the workers in the supply chain.
For GOTS to certify a product, the entire textile process is monitored closely and strictly. Here are some rules:
-
First of all, the cotton fibres have to grow without GMO seeds (genetically modified seeds), and without the use of pesticides.
-
Farmers must be certified according to international organic farming standards.
-
During the production of fabrics, the use of water and energy is monitored.
-
GOTS also has social criteria that farmers and producers must meet to be certified such as no child labour, safe working conditions, no excessive working hours or inhuman treatment.
When an organic cotton product is GOTS certified, it means that it has been ethically sourced and monitored closely during the production process.
Once the whole process from farm to final product is monitored and meets GOTS criteria, manufacturers are then allowed to be issued with a GOTS certification and can use the GOTS label in the final product.
